Limit: The rim and the curve shrink the printable area below the nominal size. Ordinary dinnerware has no coating and will not take the dye.

Sublimation
Heat turns solid dye into gas, and the gas locks into a polymer surface. Nothing sits on top of the fabric afterward, so the print has no hand. Apparel needs white or light polyester; more polyester gives stronger color, and standard sublimation prints no white ink, so the garment shows through. Hard goods need a sublimation coating. Beyond the press you need a sublimation printer with its ink and paper, plus heat-resistant tape.
Heat transfer vinyl
HTV is a heat-activated film. You cut the design, weed away the excess, press it, then peel the carrier sheet hot, warm or cold according to the film. It sticks to cotton, polyester and blends, which makes it the usual route for names, numbers and one-color logos without owning a printer. Some films want a second press after the peel. The instructions on the roll beat any generic settings chart.
DTF transfers
Direct-to-film transfers arrive with full-color artwork already printed on film, so nothing gets printed at your end. Press at the supplier’s temperature and time, peel per its hot, warm or cold specification, then give most transfers a short finishing press with the film removed. Adhesive and film differ between suppliers, and settings from one do not carry over to the next.

Read the transfer first
Temperature, time, pressure and peel method come from the transfer and the blank, not from the press. Write them down before the platen is hot.

Set up the bench
A stable, heat-resistant surface with room for the top arm to swing aside or the lid to open. Plug into a grounded outlet, switch on, then program the temperature and the time.

Let it reach temperature
Wait for the display to settle at the set point. A cold, thick blank pulls heat out of the platen, so give the press a moment to recover between cycles in a longer run.

Set pressure, place, tape
Turn the pressure knob with the press open rather than forcing it shut on a thick item. Position the transfer and tape it down for sublimation, where a slight shift leaves a faint doubled edge called ghosting.

Press, peel, inspect
Run the cycle, open at the alert, peel the way the transfer specifies. Check the first piece before the next twenty. One test blank costs less than thirty shirts pressed at the wrong pressure.
Fix the Usual Problems
Faded sublimation
Too little time or heat, or the blank itself. Low-polyester fabric prints weak, and an uncoated mug barely takes dye at all.
Ghosting
The paper moved before the dye stopped transferring. Tape the artwork and lift the press straight up instead of sliding the sheet across a hot blank.
HTV lifting at the edges
Pressure, temperature, time or the peel was off. A second press can rescue it only if the vinyl maker allows one.
Uneven transfer
Usually a contact problem. Look for a collar or seam inside the pressing area first, then check that the platen actually reaches the set temperature across the whole surface.
Bench space and power
Both presses draw 1400W from a 110V outlet, a heavy load for one appliance. Give the press a grounded circuit and keep it off a power strip shared with anything else that heats.
